Discussion Board Expectations and Grading Rubric

Expectations in Summary

Students are expected to review and demonstrate understanding of the materials in the module, post their initial response, and engage in conversation/dialogue about the topics.

1. One well-developed, referenced initial post by due date assigned.

1. 1. • The initial post should demonstrate a solid understanding of the module objectives/topic. (Aim for 200-250 words for your initial post; generally, one or more paragraphs).
      • The initial post should represent scholarly, critical and/or creative thinking; formal writing.
      • TWO professional references are required in the initial post, unless otherwise stated, presented in APA 7th ed. format.

1. Minimum of TWO reply posts (dialogue/engagements) after the initial post due dates or following your initial post (if posting early).

1. 1. • Replies to classmates’ initial posts should prompt further discussion by adding relevant content related to the topic. (Aim for at least 150 -200 words in your reply posts.)
      • A professional reference is required in at least ONE of your reply posts unless otherwise stated, presented in APA 7th ed. format.

NOTES on APA-style References in Discussion Forums

• For any references, please cite according to APA 7th Edition ( in-text and list the  reference(s) in end).
• When listing references in APA, formatting may not always copy/paste correctly in D2L Brightspace.
• Please include a “References” title prior to listing your references.

Grading Rubric

Unless otherwise noted, the following discussion rubric criteria apply to all discussion activities in the course. Each discussion is worth 10 points.

Initial Post (6 points)	The post is insightful and supported with evidence, scholarly research, and examples. Unless otherwise directed, at least TWO professional references are incorporated, using APA format (in-text and listed at end of post). Post is grammatically correct with complete sentences, coherence, unity, etc. Post submitted by due date.	Post reveals some command of the subject matter; it does not primarily restate concepts by using primarily direct quotes but may be lacking in insight or creativity. At least TWO professional references are incorporated, using APA format (in-text and listed at end of post). Few or minor grammatical errors noted. Post submitted by due date.	Does not offer insight or support ideas with evidence, scholarly research, and/or examples. Less than TWO professional references are incorporated in the post OR reference(s) is not properly cited in APA (in-text and at end of post). Consistently makes grammatical errors. Some issues with topic cohesion. Post submitted by due date.	Points raised are not relevant and do not contribute to scholarly discussion of the topic. Less than TWO professional references are incorporated in the post OR reference(s) is not properly cited in APA (in-text and at end of post). Utilizes poor spelling and grammar. There is little to no cohesion in the writing and format. Post NOT submitted by the due date.
