discussion board: strengths and individuals

We spend a great deal of time learning about the characteristics of different disabilities. However, as emphasized in the Watch: Strengths of Students with Learning Disabilities and Other Disorders item, students with disabilities have abilities and strengths, as well as needs. As a teacher, what are the benefits of focusing on the strengths and needs of your students and not on their disabilities?
