 Social Media or Surveys?

Social media seem to give a sense of public opinion.  Compared to surveys (or even polls), what are social media's advantages or disadvantage?  
Provide your most compelling reason as to why you prefer one over the other.  You could respond to an already posted position if it serves as a good basis for comparison or contrast or to provide a respectful rebuttal.  Your response should not be any longer than a 1 to 1.5 paragraphs.
