Journal #3: Gender and Theories

Visit Target or Walmart and look through the children’s toys section (due to COVID, you can just reflect on a recent visit to be safe). Make a list of your observations. Write your analysis of your observations in relation to either Symbolic Interactionist or Feminist theory.

Some things you may want to consider: What messages are being sent to children? What gender messages are being sent? How do those messages impact the child’s self-image, understanding of gender, or gender identity?

Journal #4: Film Analysis

For this journal, please watch the following short film on YouTube:

In writing, accurately apply the following concepts from Chapter 5 to what happened in the film:

• Prejudice
• Stereotype
• Racism
• Identify which discrimination type(s) you saw (e.g. prejudiced nondiscriminator, etc)
• Identify which type(s) of racism was/were evident (e.g. modern, aversive, implicit)

Writing length and format is up to you (essay, bullet list, etc.). Just make sure you are thorough and apply the concepts clearly.

 Workplace Diversity Memo (refer to Race and Ethnicity) 

This assignment is meant to allow you to put sociological theory into practice. Both memos will require you to select a major theory (functionalism, conflict, symbolic interactionist, feminist) and apply it to explain the issue at hand. If you choose the Gang Reduction option, you will follow the issue laid out on the memo outline, and if you choose Workplace Diversity option, you will follow the issue on that outline (see attached).

Remember: Pick one theory and defend how that theory best describes the memo topic/issue. Then make your recommendations (bullet list is fine) and explain why they would work.
