THIS IS THE RESPOND...............

One issue that is currently affecting North Carolina is the shortage of behavioral health professionals, which limits access to mental health and substance use treatment across the state. The North Carolina Institute of Medicine (2025) reports that 94 out of 100 counties are designated as mental health professional shortage areas. This shortage of providers results in long wait times, overcrowded emergency departments, and fragmented services. The population with low income and people of color, face the greatest barriers to accessing timely and equitable care (North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services [NCDHHS], 2025; North Carolina Health News, 2023).

Social workers play a vital role in behavioral health care, providing counseling, crisis intervention, and advocacy. However, the workforce shortage increases caseloads and provider burnout, making it harder to meet client needs effectively. Social work research offers tools to understand and address this issue. An assessments can identify where service gaps are most critical, while evaluations can assess the impact of initiatives like the North Carolina Statewide Telepsychiatry Program (NC-STeP) in expanding access to care.

By applying evidence based research methods, social workers can guide effective policy and workforce solutions, such as expanding training programs, improving provider retention, and promoting tele health. These research-driven strategies support the core social work mission of promoting human well-being and advancing social justice by ensuring equitable access to quality behavioral health care for all North Carolinians.
