Discussion Board

Introduction: One of the most effective ways that we learn is through open dialog.  This discussion board is meant for you to openly interact with each other guided by a specified topic.  Discussion participation is key to expanding your knowledge.

Discussion Board Topic:

During the past 30 years or so, American justice philosophy has embodied punishment practices based on neoclassical principles.  These practices include determinate sentencing, truth in sentencing, and just deserts.  Respond to the following prompts:

1. What is neoclassical criminology and how are the practices listed above a reflection of this philosophy?
2. Can crime be deterred?  Ensure to support your response with reliable sources.
   

Grading Criteria:

Discussion Board Initial Post:

1. Treat your initial post as if it was an essay.
2. At least 300 words
3. Use reliable sources to substantiate your work and to provide examples.  (Include in-text citations and a reference list)
4. Limited use of quotations
5. Be thorough and fully explain your points

Discussion Board Responses:

1. Must post at least 5 responses.  You do not have to respond to 5 students, only post 5 responses.  The purpose is to engage in a conversation by asking questions, providing thoughtful insight and new information to the conversation, and even sparking a friendly debate.
2. Whether you agree or disagree with a classmate, ensure that you you provide detail as to why.  
3. Do not critique grammar, writing style or format.
4. Back your opinions up with evidence, data and/or case studies.
5. Be engaged in the conversation.
