Continental philosophy began rather distinctively in the Modern period during the 1600's all the way up to today by some standards. Before this period, philosophers were grouped together so much that studying a single philosopher was a rare honor given to those who stood out outstandingly such as Aristotle and Plato.

Why do you think this is? What is it about the Modern period that caused scholars to start looking at philosophers individually during that time period instead of grouping them as they had done for 2000 years? Is it a coincidence, or do you think there is some connection between the era and the paradigm shift (change in methodology)?
