Discussion 5
Discussion: Technology and Rights, Perception, and Safety
The powerful computer in your pocket—your phone—has radically altered shopping, information sharing, and social relationships. As noted in a previous example in this course, it has also changed policing and privacy. Those two areas correlate with the wider debates around constitutional rights, public perception, and public safety that have always been integral to law enforcement. In this Discussion, you choose a new technology and discuss how its long-term use may be affected by rights, perception, and safety.
To prepare:
- Choose a new technology affecting law enforcement practice.
- You may use the technology you’ve chosen for this week’s Assignment. (Social Media or Body Camera is the ones for this weeks assignment).
Post a response to the following prompts:
- Identify a new technology affecting law enforcement practice.
- How do the issues of constitutional rights, public perception, and public safety contribute to the long-term viability of a new technology?
