Since psychological insights into criminal behavior were first applied to the practice of law, the relationship between psychology and the legal system has been marked by controversy and conflict. Costanzo and Krauss (2021) note that Freud, the father of modern day psychology, believed that his psychological theories could not only “improve,” but “transform” the way law was practiced (p. 2). Although psychologists’ initial entry into law might have been made with the best of intentions, some legal scholars viewed their interest as an unwelcome intrusion.
