Since psychological insights into criminal behavior were first applied to the practice of law, the relationship between psychology and the legal system has been marked by controversy and conflict. Costanzo and Krauss (2021) note that Freud, the father of modern day psychology, believed that his psychological theories could not only “improve,” but “transform” the way law was practiced (p. 2). Although psychologists’ initial entry into law might have been made with the best of intentions, some legal scholars viewed their interest as an unwelcome intrusion. More than a century later, the two professions continue to maintain what Costanzo and Krauss describe as "a cautious alliance" (p. 1).

of intentions, some legal scholars viewed their interest as an unwelcome intrusion. More than a century later, the two professions continue to maintain what Costanzo and Krauss describe as "a cautious alliance" (p. 1).
Costanzo and Krauss refer to the interaction between psychology and the law as a "clash of cultures" because the fields do not share similar objectives. Costanzo and Krauss argue that psychology, like all sciences, uses scientific inquiry as a basic methodology. Consequently, when asked by the courts to draw definitive conclusions, forensic psychologists are hard-pressed to state a simple yes or no. On the stand, they may feel ethically compromised because their testimony provides likelihoods and probabilities. On the other hand, the court is charged with delivering a clear-cut ruling either for or against, guilty or not, right or wrong.
For this week’s Discussion, you examine controversies related to the role of forensic psychologists within the legal system.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review the Course Introduction, located under the left navigation bar. Keep this overview in mind as you work through each week of the course. Review Chapter 1 in your course text, Forensic and Legal Psychology . Focus on the tension that exists between the fields of psychology and law. Refer to the Assignment Handout for your assigned topic and further instructions to examine a current controversy in forensic psychology. Review the article(s) that address your assigned controversy. Your assigned topic articles can be found under Week 1 Resources and the Week 1 Discussion Assignment Handout. Consider both perspectives relevant to your assigned controversy. Make an informed argument for the perspective you consider most appropriate. PERSONAL MOTIVATIONS AND CAREER GOALS
Salisbury (2012) attributes the recent growing interest in forensic psychology to the popularity of investigative crime television series, as cited in Bartol and Bartol (2012b, p. 18). Many of these shows focus on solving crimes with the help of a forensic psychologist. Your first exposure to the term forensic psychology may have been through these television programs.
When your undergraduate program of study ends, you may want to pursue a number of professional and educational opportunities in the field of forensic psychology. From trial consultants assisting in jury selection to expert witnesses testifying on a defendant’s mental competence, forensic psychologists are involved in many aspects of the legal process. As you explore your options in the field of forensic psychology, you must be aware of the educational requirements for forensic psychology occupations. Many occupations in forensic psychology require an advanced degree.
In this week’s Assignment, you identify professional areas of interest to you and explain which career paths in forensic psychology you may choose to follow.
To prepare for this Assignment: Focus on occupations in forensic psychology.
Review this week’s Learning Resources, including the Bartol and Bartol (2012b) book excerpt and Chapter 1 of your Costanzo and Krauss (2021) course text. Note:
