Consider two people from different parts of the world—one from Argentina and one from South Korea. Both consider themselves to be friendly, hard-working, and spiritual. Do these three personality characteristics manifest in the same behaviors across the two cultures? To what degree did cultural influence shape the two people toward being friendlier, hard-working, and spiritual, and to what degree is this the result of individual personality? These are the types of questions that psychologists studying personality across cultures might try to answer, and as you can see, they are quite complicated.
Researchers have developed a set of cultural characteristics that can be used to compare cultures to one another, including how cultures influence the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions of their members. For this Discussion, you reflect on these cultural characteristics for your own culture and how they may have shaped your personality.
