 In 1969 Morrison started writing Sula in a situation where most African and Americans practiced activism. Morrison, with other African activists, was putting much of their energy towards working on equality, human rights, and other legal opportunities. The book addresses most of the human racial activities, bigotry, and the dominance of the African American people. The book addresses various issues touching the despair most of the citizens experienced at their workplaces.  The kind of jobs most of these people did determine their survival. In this case, Eva decides to cut her leg to raise some finance to keep her family. Morrison, in his book, argues that some of the people faced racial indiscrimination situations where some had to plead with the whites to get some favor. It is evident from Helene's situation where she experienced while heading to South using the train. However, some of the activists like Sula do not plead on the train to get away to the South. Instead, she fights with white boys onboard the train who attempted to harass her with friend Nel.
