Many folks appreciate communication shortcuts to quickly transfer meaning. Emoticons are an example of a communication shortcut. For your initial response, identify and discuss the need for emoticons in electronic communication. Choose one of the following upon which to base your response:

• I love emoticons! Within business communication time is money and communication shortcuts are essential.
• I hate smileys! Within business communication we must be precise and clear in our communication, so communication shortcuts should never be used.
• Life is complex and there is a middle ground, and limited use of emoticons can help me improve the effectiveness of business communications.
