1. Chaucer narrates the General Prologue as a pilgrim himself. But Chaucer the pilgrim (our narrator) is not exactly the same as Chaucer the writer. Chaucer’s narrator is a created character just like the other pilgrims. What does Chaucer the pilgrim think of the group he is planning to join? What traits in the various pilgrims does he admire? Were you surprised by any of his descriptions?
2. What does the General Prologue reveal about the relationship between wealth, status, and identity? Pick 2 or 3 pilgrims and briefly describe their priorities and values.
