Hello everyone-

Please read Chapter 7 from A Different Mirror before watching this week's film. We will be discussing the chapter next Monday in class, however, reading it now will help you contextualize what's happening in the documentary (and answer the discussion questions). In consideration of your time, I'm giving you until Thursday at 8pm to post your first response and will keep the board open until Sunday at 10pm.

Discussion questions:

1) Name three key factors that led to the U.S. war with Mexico, including economic and ideological considerations. Please use quotations from text/documentary to support your answers.

2) In class today, we began talking about the concept of racial capitalism (dispossession of land, settler colonialism, racialized hierrarchies of labor, extralegal violence, etc). Do you see aspects of this happening after the war and annexation? Please give at least one example.

Your initial response should be two paragraphs (minimum), and as always, please support your answers with evidence from the texts.
