To minimize the disparity of academic rigor among individual state standards, the Common Core State Standards were developed in hopes of providing consistency across the nation.

These videos present a brief overview of the purpose and developing principles behind the creation of the Common Core State Standards. Based upon your viewing of these videos and reading of Chapter 2 in the text, please respond to the following questions:

• What are the Common Core State Standards and how are they meant to support the improvement of our U.S. educational system?
• Examine and describe the five guiding principles behind the development of the Common Core Standards in your own words. Explain how each of these five principles might impact you (or your effectiveness) as a classroom teacher.
• Do you feel that these Common Core Standards are an improvement to our educational system? Why or why not? Provide evidence to support your response.
