Philosophy and theory form the invisible foundation beneath every nursing action, shaping how you view patients, define health, and understand your professional role. This video discussion invites you to explore which nursing philosopher or theorist resonates most deeply with your personal values and emerging professional identity, then engage with peers to examine how philosophical frameworks connect to contemporary nursing practice and public perception.

 

Instructions

Please respond to the video prompt below in a single comprehensive  VIDEO POST, then reply to at least one peer's response in writing.

· Initial post due: Wednesday by 11:59 p.m. ET

· Reply post due: Sunday by 11:59 p.m. ET

· Per the rubric, you are required to use at least 1 scholarly article to support your written response to a peer — journal articles only. The textbook does not count as a scholarly article.

· All sources must be cited and referenced in APA format. Citations and references must be included. APA formatting accuracy is not evaluated for this assignment.

· You must also submit one document containing a screenshot of the first page of each source used. Sources listed without a corresponding screenshot will earn zero for that portion of the rubric.

Video Prompt (Initial Post):

Reflect on your own values, beliefs, and experiences (if applicable) in nursing so far.

· Which nursing philosopher or theorist aligns most closely with how you think about patients, health, and the nurse's role?

· Describe the philosophical basis of their work, identify their key concepts, and explain how their theory could guide your practice and professional growth going forward.

· Describe how this theory or philosophy can be applied to the topic for your Scholarly Paper.

Your peer described a nursing philosophy rooted in specific values and ideals. Now consider how nursing is portrayed in television or film. Identify a specific nurse character from a TV show or movie and reflect on the image of nursing presented — consider factors like dress, professional behavior, intelligence, autonomy, and relationships with other healthcare providers. How does that portrayal compare to nursing as it exists today, and to the professional values reflected in your peer's philosophy post? How do media portrayals shape public perception of nurses, for better or worse?
