Off the Straight & Narrow: Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals & Television

For this assignment, you need to view the film Off the Straight & Narrow: Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals & Television which is posted in Blackboard under “Screeners”. You can also watch it here: https://ufvca.kanopy.com/video/straight-narrow but you must access it through your UFV library account.

1. In what ways do you think that today’s media images of gay people are similar to those of the late 60s and the 70s? In what ways are they different? 

2. Why are bisexuals so rarely represented on American television and how are they generally portrayed on those occasions when they are shown? 

3. What is meant by the expression “queer readings” and why are they important to lesbian, bisexual, and gay audiences?  

4. If there were a sudden increase of media representations of lesbians, gays and bisexuals, would queer readings become obsolete? 

 Be thorough in your answers without fluffing them up. Use examples from the film and anecdotal examples from real life where applicable as you need to support your positions. Your text may be a valuable resource!!  If you are taking a direct quote from the textbook you can simply include the page # after the quote. For example: … Canada approaches media with an understanding that it is “how we come to understand and share our culture” (p. 33). If quoting from the movie simply indicate in the sentence and use “ “ on the directly quoted portion. Any other outside sources (none are required) require a full APA citation and the inclusion of a reference page.
