o Preparation for the Diacritic Exam The Diacritic Oral Exam is different from any of our previous exams. For this exam, you will not take a written exam as we have for the previous 3 exams. Instead, you will be required to produce 5 randomly selected made-up words out of 10 of the transcribed words below. In order to prepare for this exam, you should be sure to review the following:  The list of word transcriptions provided below  You should be able to correctly produce every single one of them  In order to produce them correctly, you must know what sounds the IPA symbols represent

and what the diacritic markers indicate in terms of the production of each sound.  Do NOT insert pauses between sounds. Instead, produce each word fluently and naturally.

Additional Note:  Prior to this exam, you must complete a Practice Exam. The purpose of this Practice Exam is to

ensure that your computer is working properly and you can successfully use the Record/Upload Media tool in the Rich Content Editor. Please consult ASU tech if you have any problems using this tool for the practice exam. It’s your responsibility to ensure your computer will work for this exam.

In order to prepare for this exam and every subsequent exam, you should do the following: - Re-read the chapters very very closely - Carefully review the video “Preparation for the Diacritic Exam” - Re-take the Knowledge Check questions that appear after each mini-lecture - Briefly run through the videos again, particularly on areas you felt you didn’t understand - Reach out to Dr LaCross, or either of our TAs to clarify and discuss any topic you didn’t understand

General Notes: - It is your responsibility to clarify anything you don’t understand. - You MAY use scratch paper for the exam. Please just hold up the paper and show the camera that it is blank on both sides at the beginning of the quiz. - You must complete the exam in 20 minutes or less. Please keep an eye on the time as you progress. - It is not recommended that you take this exam quickly. Take your time thinking through how to produce each item. - You may produce each item as many times as you like, you will be graded on your best/most accurate production. - You have only one chance to complete the exam. You may not retake it.
