Before posting, read the full assignment instructions in the Canvas module.  The Canvas prompt includes detailed explanations of the required news  source categories, the combined source documentation/evidence log table,  required module sources, section expectations, and peer reply  guidelines.

Initial Post Requirements

Your initial post must include all of the following:

  1. Selected crime-related event - Briefly identify the event you chose and explain why you selected it.
  2. Three news stories about the same event. You must include:

    • One local news source
    • One national legacy news source
    • One digital/online-only news source
    • Remember: these categories refer to the type of news organization, not whether you accessed the article online.

  3. Completed combined source documentation and evidence log table
Use the table provided in the Canvas assignment prompt.
  4. Comparative framing analysis (Suggested length: 4–6 well-developed paragraphs)
  5. News consumption and trust discussion (Suggested length: 1–2 well-developed paragraphs)
  6. Ethics check using the SPJ Code of Ethics (Suggested length: 1–2 well-developed paragraphs)
  7. Reflection (Suggested length: 1–2 well-developed paragraphs)
  8. References or links - Include links to your three news stories and clearly refer to the required module materials.

Required Module Sources

Your post must use all four module sources:

  • Pew Research Center, “State of the News Media” materials
  • Society of Professional Journalists, Code of Ethics
  • Surette, Media, Crime, and Criminal Justice, Chapter 1
  • On the Media, “Breaking News Consumer’s Handbook: Crime Edition”

Reminder About Length and Depth

The completed table does  not replace the written analysis. The table organizes your evidence, but  your written sections must explain what the evidence means. Short posts  with only a few sentences after the table will not meet the assignment  expectations.
