Do you think more regulations and standards are needed for setting product prices, or should all companies be free to charge any prices they want? Why, or why not?

Response 1:Cina

There are arguments that can be for more regulations and standards for setting prices. Even if companies are free to charge any price they want, they may lose customers due to the excessive costs. This would potentially drive a further division between the haves and have-nots in some cases. If customers were to refuse to purchase their products, then the prices may come down to a point that is within reason. In the event of an emergency and a company can drive up prices as seen in price gouging, the companies are fully taking advantage of the consumers. Flight prices within the airline industry, if tickets have not been made within three weeks of flight continue to increase and the airline charging any price they want, again price gouging the customers. I do think it is important for some regulations which allow for operations of a free market but the concern if there are no regulations then the companies can take full advantage of consumers through price gouging. Hoarding and price gouging were seen during COVID, and many supplies were not available to those who could not afford the products due to the increase in price and hoarding. Another industry that has exorbitant prices is the pharmaceutical industry, although many patients may have insurance, they still may not be able to afford medications and must choose between their medications and food. The country does have assistance but in many cases these patients still cannot afford many of the medications, especially if they are new on the market, with no generic choice. It is important to have some regulations on pricing as many people would not be able to get their medicine, food, and other products. Many would argue that people’s salaries have gone up over the years, but along with that increase other consumer products have gone up, making this a no-win situation.
