There are various types of forms that officers must fill out when recording information. They usually fall into six different categories: traffic summons, traffic crashes, misdemeanor crimes, felony crimes, incident reports, and suspicious circumstances.
Traffic summons reports take place when an officer has pulled over an individual for a traffic violation. These are more commonly known as “being written a ticket.” They can be for various different infractions.
Traffic crash reports take place when there has quite literally, been a crash. This can be between two or more cars, and even if a single car has crashed into a still object. These reports contain plenty of information, including things like statements, property damage, injuries, and diagrams of the scene (Barnes, 2013).
For misdemeanor crimes, either misdemeanor summons or complaint forms are used. Misdemeanor crimes are criminal cases that usually result in one year or less of jail time. The forms used for these cases are not as in-depth and detailed as ones used for more serious crimes (Morris & Merson, 2016).
Felony crime reports are the most detailed kind of reports. They require great attention to detail and plenty of information about the case to be filled out properly. Felony cases are criminal cases that result in a year of jail time or more.
Incident reports are a sort of catch-all category, and are used in a variety of different circumstances. Some examples of such circumstances are a domestic violence call, child custody issues, or a violation of rules by an inmate (Morris & Merson, 2016).
The last category of reports is a suspicious circumstances report. These are not necessarily criminal case reports, but they have the potential to lead to them. These would be used in various different circumstances where unusual behavior is taking place.
It is absolutely crucial that officers are thorough and have great attention to detail when they are writing their reports. A verse that supports this principle is Proverbs 13:4. “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied” ( English Standard Version Bible, 2016, Prov. 13:4). This verse reinforces the Biblical necessity for hard work and thoroughness.

There are seven different types of reports that are covered in our textbook that an officer may utilize, and they are for “traffic summons (ticket), traffic crashes, misdemeanor crimes, felony crimes, domestic violence calls for service, incident reports, and suspicious circumstances.” (Morris, and Merson, 2017) The basic job of an officer is to enforce traffic laws in their area they are assigned to. And one key part to this is summons or tickets to the people who do not follow the law in the area. Traffic crashes involve an officer investigating a crash when it occurs. “In most medium to large law enforcement departments, there are specialized patrol units designed to investigate crashes.” (Morris, and Merson, 2017) the next type of crime misdemeanor Crimes this also include complaint which would result in a jail sentence of one year or less plus a possible fine upon the conviction mainly used in petty offences. Felony Crimes are those criminal offenses that typically, upon conviction, impose a sentence of one year or more in the state penitentiary system. Felony crimes are different that domestic reports due to domestic reports. Violence reports were seen as a family matter rather than a crime. in most cases no report was completed by the responding law enforcement agencies. Incident reports are reports that do not fit the normal margins for a criminal case; this alows them to keep track of all information to be documented. “Suspicious circumstances report is similar to an incident report. The only difference betweeen the two reports is that an incident report is normally non-criminal” (Morris, Merson, 2017) and this report could lead to a criminal investigation at a later date.
The importance of how an officer writes reports dealing with accuracy and legibility of them are described by (Barnes, 2013) “when officers investigate an incident, they are most likely not to be present. Ultimately, this supervisor will review and pass judgement on the officers' reports.” This is important to think about and how I can relate to this is when in the navy we have any casualties on the ship we need to plot the damage ore fires that happen if the person that is reviewing the plotted information how are they supposed to take over or in the instance of the report how are the supervisors supposed to properly review it. If we all properly present ourselves to God this will in turn bring so much good out of the world for people not to lie, some officers may lie on their reports and that is wrong. "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15).
