There are several factors that affect an individual’s behavior. What someone is exposed to in childhood can greatly influence one’s outcome in life. To reduce aggressive behavior that is associated with violent crimes, it is important that young children are not shown violence in films or other media.
With all the shows that are available across streaming services, it is necessary for parents to put parental controls on their children’s accounts and closely monitor what they are watching. Children tend to imitate what they see, so exposure to violent movies can lead to violent behavior. As the child continue to watch violent media, the odds of their behavior becoming seriously violent increase by 70%, which also increases their chances of becoming a problem with the police (Ybarra et al., 2022). Even if the child does not show violent behaviors right away, parents must still be aware that over time the chances of them becoming violent increase.
The media also portrays most things in an exaggerated way to the point it is unrealistic. For example, an action movie that has excessive amounts of violence may have scenes where the main character walks away from an intense fight unscathed or with minimal injuries. For children who do not understand logic, this can seem cool and, as stated before, try to imitate.
In order to prevent crime, one crucial place to start is with juveniles. Most adult offenders commit their first crime before the age of 18. For violent charges, juveniles are at a higher risk for re-arrest (Robertson et al., 2020). Factors like genetics, adverse childhood events, and social pressure can all lead to aggressive behavior in children, but parents can avoid the escalation of aggression by enforcing what their children may watch. Violent movies can make an aggressive child violent, which causes problems for both the child and the caretakers.
