In the textbook’s PPT, the important thing is to know the terms: throughput, utilization, and bottleneck. Disregard the types of processes in this PPT: project, job shop, flow shop, continuous flow, because we use a different set of terminology that’s more common among practitioners.

In my PPT, I talk about the evolution of manufacturing activities in modern economies (like the one in the U.S.) and the two basic types of manufacturing processes: MTO/ATO (learn about the difference), and MTS. Then I talk about the real manufacturing processes: job shop, batch, assembly line, and continuous flow. It’s best that you watch the manufacturing process video first then come back to the PPT slides. The last slide shows how companies can streamline (eliminate non value add processes) after re-engineering their processes. You need to see if you can find cases/examples of such business practices of re-engineering. There is a trend now to bring manufacturing back, partly because of the policy change and partly because of advanced technologies.

The videos: Krispy Kreme, Donut shop, Kula, all represent different manufacturing processes being used in different scenarios. Ask yourself to see if you understand the reasons why these organizations chose the way they make goods. Do you think you can use a different method to improve on their quality/costs?
