Discussion 1:
Staffing shortages is one of the biggest challenges facing public health professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau report, 16.8% of the population was aged 65 or older in 2021, and predicts that the number will grow to 21% in 2030 (USC, 2023). With the aging population, there is a need for more healthcare workers to care for this population. The COVID-19 pandemic also worsened the shortage situation, as healthcare professionals chose to leave their jobs due to stress and burnout. Lastly, lack of investment in training of healthcare workers is a major factor to staffing shortages (USC, 2023). Limited availability of clinical trainers and educational facilities, as well as high tuition costs for students, prevent the expansion of the healthcare workforce.
A shortage in the healthcare workforce in the United States leads to increased workload and burnout for the healthcare professionals and poor patient outcomes. Burnout is defined as physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. This exhaustion can cause poor performance, which can lead to medical errors and also cause feelings of guilt and shame. These emotional challenges can lead to healthcare professionals to leave their jobs. Burnouts negatively affect the overall heatlhcare experience for both privders and patients.
To address the shortages, there are both short-term and long-term strategies. For short-term strategies, hospitals have hired travel nurses and doctors or other temporary staff, however experts agree that this may no longer be effective (USC, 2023). There needs to be a new approach in addressing staffing shortages. One way is improving retention strategies that offer incentives to increase job satisfaction. This might include more flexible schedules, increased pay, increased vacation times, and bonuses for picking up extra shifts. For long-term strategies, it may require government initiatives. Some solutions include investing in public health programs, expanding scope of practice like allowing NP full practice authority, and utilizing telemedicine to improve access to care.
