Cultural Immersion Project

For my Cultural Immersion Project, I would like to focus on single mothers and generational stress. I chose this group because motherhood often involves balancing multiple responsibilities such as parenting, finances, work, education, and maintaining emotional wellness. Single mothers may also experience additional stress due to limited support systems, societal expectations, and the emotional burden of caring for children while managing personal and professional responsibilities.

I selected this topic because it is both meaningful and relatable to me. I am interested in learning more about how generational stress, financial hardships, and family dynamics impact mental health and overall well-being among single mothers. Through this project, I hope to better understand the challenges they face, the coping mechanisms they use, and the importance of community and emotional support.

One perceived bias I may have is assuming that all single mothers struggle in the same ways or lack support systems. I recognize that every individual’s experience is different and shaped by culture, family background, socioeconomic status, and personal resilience. My research and immersion experience will help broaden my understanding and allow me to approach this population with greater cultural sensitivity, empathy, and awareness as a future counselor.
