Critical Thinking

This week we will look at a couple of examples and practice analyzing statistics as well as constructing and evaluating arguments based on statistics.

Students are required to post TWICE.

Post should address the following topics (Topic A and Topic B):

TOPIC A) Go to the following page: http://graphics.latimes.com/2014-la-county-campaign-finance/

Here you will find statistics on campaign contributions to candidates for three offices in Los Angeles County. The statistics are fairly detailed and should be easy to follow. Construct one argument on the basis of these statistics, and make clear your key assumptions.  Here is one example:

EXAMPLE

Assumptions: Candidates who raise a lot more money than their competitors are more likely to win the election. The data provided by the LA Times on this race are accurate.

Henry Prang has raised almost three time the money John Morris has.

Therefore, John Morris will probably lose and Henry Prang will probably win.

Topic B) Go to the following page: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/20/college-income-premium_n_6720902.html?ir=Business and read the article, "Why You Should Go To College".

Offer commentary on the argument in this article. You may offer critical comment on the argument. You may examine assumptions. You may analyze the structure of the argument or comment on the statistical evidence provided. A long essay is not required. Focus on a key point, and offer commentary.
