Criminology

The mafia has been displayed prominently in the mass media and often portrayed in ways that correspond with what Furman sociologist Paul Kooistra has called the "criminal as hero." He argues that in every culture, some criminals -- including ones who engage in heinous behavior -- become folk heroes or figures of admiration.  Reflect on American society.  Why, in the United States, have mafia figures become "folk heroes" displayed in mass media in ways that are often quite positive?  Explain.
