The Details

•You are a detective and called to respond to a death scene in an apartment located at 105 anywhere Street, Apt. 1A, Neverland, NC 20000.

•Upon arrival you note the officers have properly secured the scene, and have generated a crime scene log. The officer allows you in after you show proper identification.

•Once you are in, you assume control of the crime scene.

•During a canvass interview, several witnesses indicated they heard a loud struggle in the decedent’s apartment.

•Numerous witnesses have indicated the victim and her boyfriend, John Smith, have been having arguments. One of the witnesses, Mr. John Joe, stated that he observed John Smith exit the apartment of Ms. Elizabeth Jones and later was seen entering the apartment with some type of bat or big knife.

•A check of police records indicates the victim, Ms. Elizabeth Jones had secured a warrant for arrest against John Smith for assault and battery. The warrant for arrest has not been served.

•Your job is to examine the crime scene based on the following photograph and prepare an investigator’s report. Please see the Sample Crime Scene Investigative Report instructions (located in the Module Resource folder) regarding the information required in your report.

•The following photograph is from the hallway and bedroom of the apartment. Other areas in the apartment were generally unremarkable.

•Though difficult to glean a complete understanding of the crime scene from a single photograph, do your best to analyze the photograph and complete the assignment based only upon what you observe.
