The Details
•You are a detective and called to respond to a death scene in an apartment located at 105 anywhere Street, Apt. 1A, Neverland, NC 20000.
•Upon arrival you note the officers have properly secured the scene, and have generated a crime scene log. The officer allows you in after you show proper identification.
•Once you are in, you assume control of the crime scene.
•During a canvass interview, several witnesses indicated they heard a loud struggle in the decedent’s apartment.
•Numerous witnesses have indicated the victim and her boyfriend, John Smith, have been having arguments. One of the witnesses, Mr. John Joe, stated that he observed John Smith exit the apartment of Ms. Elizabeth Jones and later was seen entering the apartment with some type of bat or big knife.
•A check of police records indicates the victim, Ms. Elizabeth Jones had secured a warrant for arrest against John Smith for assault and battery. The warrant for arrest has not been served.
•Your job is to examine the crime scene based on the following photograph and prepare an investigator’s report. Please see the Sample Crime Scene Investigative Report instructions (located in the Module Resource folder) regarding the information required in your report.
•The following photograph is from the hallway and bedroom of the apartment. Other areas in the apartment were generally unremarkable.
•Though difficult to glean a complete understanding of the crime scene from a single photograph, do your best to analyze the photograph and complete the assignment based only upon what you observe.

Introduction:
For this assignment, you will analyze a photograph from a homicide scene and generate a report based on your findings.
The Assignment:
Scenario: You have been called to analyze a possible homicide. Attached you will find a document containing a crime scene photograph and case facts surrounding the victim's death. Your task is to closely review and scrutinize the photograph and case facts, then prepare a crime scene investigative report (Sample of Crime Scene Investigative Report is located in the "Optional Resources" tab) using word processing software. Your report must include the below four areas/sections and thoroughly describe all key facts. Each area/section must be separated from other portions of the report (in other words, each area/section must contain 1-2 paragraphs [75-100 words per paragraph] containing facts that relate to the topic associated with only that section).

Format: The report must include the following the areas/sections (these can be your subtitles for this assignment).
1. Synopsis of the case facts.
2. Description of the death scene.
3. Observed items of evidence.
4. Steps you would take to further investigate this death (also known as an investigative plan).
Note 1: Your analysis must be supported based on the information gathered from the photograph (be cautious- do not make assumptions that are not supported!!!).

APA Formatting Requirements:
· The Running head (The words Running head: need to be inside the first header of the title page).
· The title page include the following byline: Assignment title; your name; school name; course number; and date (all bylines need to be in the middle of the title page).
· Use one-inch margins.
· Use a 12-point Times New Roman font.
· Use double line spacing in the document.

This week’s reading assignment and Department of Justice Death Investigation Guidelines.APA resources are located in the " Optional Sources" tab located in the navigational area, this includes APA abstract (Power points, PDF files, etc.), APA formatted Sample Research Paper.
The student will write a 500-700 lab in current APA format that focus on the four topic areas/sections (above) involving the homicide case analysis file (which includes the crime scene photograph, and any other information provided within this assignment). The paper must include at least the course textbook as source/citation.
