This presentation is about secondary transition. Secondary transition refers to the process of
preparing students with disabilities for life after high school. This includes planning for post-
secondary education or training, employment, and independent living.
Slide 2
The term ESE stands for Exceptional Student Education and is more commonly known as
Special Education. Special Education consist of specifically designed instruction and related
services for students with disabilities.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was created in 2004. The IDEA law guarantees
that students with disabilities receive a free, appropriate, public education that is tailored to their
individual needs.

All students with disabilities should be educated with their non-disabled peers to the maximum
extent possible. This refers to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

An Individualized Education program or IEP is a legal document that outlines educational
needs, goals and services. Appropriate evaluation is important when planning an IEP.
Assessments must accurately identify the student’s disability.

Parents have the right to participate within their child’s education. Procedural Safeguards are
checks and balances put into place to protect the rights of parents and families.
