Concert Analysis
Can't make it to a live event? Since this is an online course you have the option of watching a video of a concert. Not exactly the same as being there (please treat yourself to a live performance if at all possible), but you may choose between Beethoven or Berlioz, or another composer & piece from the Keeping Score website (with instructor permission).
Do not complete this listening assignment until you have completed Unit 6 - Romantic as you are expected to use vocabulary learned in those units as well as refer to concepts from the era and how they are incorporated in the music.
1. READ: assignment guidelines and grading rubric (if you haven't already).
2. BACKGROUND: Follow the Keeping Score link to learn about your chosen composer & their music (much like you'd read notes in a program if you attended a concert - except this is more fun!).
3. Choose which composer/symphony you'd like to explore:
- Beethoven, Symphony No. 5 ("The Call of Fate") Follow the link below to watch and listen to the entire Symphony No. 5. Be sure to listen for the various ways Beethoven incorporates his 4 note motive ("da-da-da-DAH!") in different ways and different voices in each movement.
- Berlioz, "Symphonie Fantastique" If you want to dip into the macabre, consider "Symphony Fantastique" by Hector Berlioz. Be sure to read the program notes that accompany the music - there's a reason this one is included in music appreciation courses! There is also an annotated version you can watch/listen to that guides you through the entire piece.
- If you want to listen to a different classically-oriented music piece (i.e. a different one from the Keeping Score website), contact instructor for approval and include link to concert.
3. SUBMISSION: Write analysis about concert and include background information from website that enhanced your listening
