Assignment Title: Compliance Walkthrough – A One-Week Micro-Practice Challenge

Course: Healthcare Compliance and Risk Management
Level: Undergraduate

Miller’s Level: DOES (Demonstrates real-world practice)
Duration: 1 week

Assignment Summary:

In this assignment, you will step into the role of a compliance-minded professional by conducting a micro-practice assessment of a real-world or simulated healthcare setting. Over the course of one week, you’ll observe, research, or role-play how a healthcare facility—or even an office or clinic environment—handles compliance risks. Then, you’ll identify at least one potential compliance vulnerability and write a short action plan to address it.

Assignment Steps:

  1. Pick Your Setting:
         Choose one of the following:
    • A healthcare office or unit where you work or have access to (e.g., front desk, imaging center, clinic)
    • A simulated environment (your home can stand in for a healthcare site)
  2. Observe or Reflect:
Consider how the environment handles areas such as:
    • Patient privacy (HIPAA)
    • Documentation practices
    • Workplace safety
    • Access to secure systems or areas
    • Use of signage, labels, or training materials
  3. Identify a Compliance Risk:
Write a brief description of one potential issue or area for improvement, such as:
    • Computer screens visible to patients
    • Incomplete training logs
    • Unlocked medical storage
    • Lack of signage regarding patient rights
  4. Develop a Mini Action Plan (750–1,000 words):
         Include the following sections:
    • Compliance Risk Description
    • Applicable Law/Regulation
    • Suggested Corrective Action
    • How You Would Communicate This to Staff/Leadership
    • Brief Reflection: What did you learn about practicing compliance in real life?

Learning Objectives:

  • Translate compliance theory into practical awareness and risk identification.
  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically and ethically in a working environment.
  • Propose realistic, professional solutions to everyday compliance challenges.
  • Reflect on your role as a future compliance advocate.
