Compare Western Hemisphere Maps

Compare 2 maps of the Western Hemisphere.  The first is the Western Global Map of 1770 (chapter 6, map 1) and the second is the Western Hemisphere after the collapse of Spanish and Portuguese rule (chapter 6, map 2).

Make sure you read the map titles and explanatory notations, then the position of borders, and the legend (or key).

Once you have examined the maps, write an essay (300-500 words) that answers the following:

With the end of Spanish and Portuguese rule, how did the newly independent nations organize geographically?  What problems would arise from the new boundaries and how might this impact nation development?  What regions of the hemisphere were still under European control in 1830?  What problems might this cause for the region?
