Assignment: Write a 2 to 3-page reflection essay, reflecting on and applying three theories from Chapters 7, 8, 9, and/or 10 of your online textbook and posted videos in Module Two to create a personal learning strategy tailored to your current life situation, with a specific focus on enhancing communication in one-to-one relationships. Complete one of the posted self-assessment questionnaires with your honest answers, and self-score the questionnaire by following the directions on the form to understand YOUR results as they relate to the information in the textbook.  Utilize a minimum of FIVE specific communication terms from the readings and videos provided in Module Two.  Cite page number references and video timestamps in parentheses after using each term to support your observations and connections.  This approach will help you apply interpersonal communication concepts as a form of "self-help" while you learn, study, and understand communication theories.   Bold the communication terms for easy identification

Instructions

1. Select a Questionnaire: Select one of the three self-assessment  questionnaires listed below.  Fill it out honestly with the best analysis of your own behaviors, feelings, and thoughts with your interpersonal relationships.

· L istening Styles Questionnaire.pdf Download Listening Styles Questionnaire.pdf

· US Coast Guard Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire.docx (Download)Links to an external site.

· ABCs of Conflict.pdf Download ABCs of Conflict.pdf

2. Select Theories: Review the content of Chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10 in your online textbook.  Choose three theories that directly relate to the theme of the questionnaire you completed.  Choose theories and terms that resonate with you or are particularly relevant to your current life situation (e.g., marriage, parenting, student, employee, intern, sibling, child of aging parents, etc.).

3. Synthesize Information:  Watch the corresponding videos posted in the module to gain a deeper understanding of the theories and their models. Synthesize the information from the textbook and videos, ensuring you understand the key concepts and terminology.

4. Apply Theories: Reflect on how each theory can be applied to your personal learning strategy and current life situation, with a specific focus on enhancing communication in one-to-one relationships.  Use at least FIVE specific terms from the readings, citing the page numbers where these terms are discussed.

5. Write Your Reflection by following the same formatting used when writing your Reflection #1 in the Orientation section of Moodle.  Below, you will see a basic outline to guide you through the critical thinking process and to compose a coherent and meaningful reflection paper.

· Introduction Paragraph:  Begin by identifying the self-assessment questionnaire that you completed.  Then, briefly introduce the three theories you have selected from Module Two and connect those theories to your personal life and your interpersonal communication skills.

· Body Paragraphs (at least 3):  In each paragraph, provide a detailed explanation of one of your three selected theories and their key concepts.  Explain how each theory applies to your current life situation and personal learning strategy, focusing on one-to-one communication in a particular context or setting. Provide specific examples of how you can implement these theories to improve your interactions in personal relationships on the job, at work, in the classroom, at home, or on a date, etc.  Use and cite at least FIVE (5) specific terms from the textbook readings and  bold the terms for easy identification. Use proper  citations for each term you reference from the textbook by citing the section number or from one of the videos such as:  self-actualization  (Chapter 1, Fig. 2.1.1) or (Rogers’ Self Concept video, timestamp 1:03).

· Conclusion: Summarize your key insights and how you plan to incorporate these theories into your ongoing personal and professional development, particularly in the context of one-to-one communication.

Additional Concept to Consider for Your Reflection:

· After completing the self-assessment and reading the textbook, how has being mindful (or lack thereof) affected your communication and relationships?  What will you do differently in the future?

Part B

BEFORE beginning this discussion reread information in your textbook and watch corresponding videos about Rawlins' Five Characteristics of Friendships and Rawlin's friendship dialectics. Then, think about how many "friends" you have on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, or ????  Is the number important to you?  Why?

In this discussion forum, you will watch an interview with Simon Sinek, an author and leadership expert, and Eric Michielsen about friendships.   Mr. Sinek is an AMAZING thinker and speaker.  He travels the world, teaching "out of the box" thinking about what effective and powerful leaders do with people and for their institutions to achieve success.  In this very short interview, you will hear Mr. Sinek explain the difference between friends and acquaintances that echoes information given in Chapter 10 of your textbook.

Directions:  BE sure to "do" all the things listed below in your initial posting.

1. After watching this video,  tell your classmates his message in your own words to begin your posting for the discussion.

2. Clearly  state two or three observations or messages that are communicated by Mr. Sinek about the differences between acquaintances and friends that you believe are significant and important for everyone to know and understand.

3. In your own words, explain the importance of these differences in today's communication climate of social media.

4. Conclude your posting by revisiting Section 10.1 in your textbook, and specifically the Mindfulness Activity on page 10.1.5.  Then, answer the following questions in your post by comparing YOUR responses to the information given in Section 10.1 of your textbook .  Be sure to cite the page number reference and use quotes as appropriate to support your observations.

·

· When you are with your friends,  are you truly present, or do you let distractions such as your cell phone or personal concerns get in in your way of truly being present in the moment for and with your friend?

· How often do and your friends  do new things, or are you stuck in a rut doing the same things all the time or talk about the same things all the time?

· When you are with your friends, are you clearly  aware of your attitude, your purpose, and your attention?  Can you disagree with your friend and have meaningful discussions to learn from each other?   Does your friend persuade or influence you to behave in a manner that you feel in your "gut" is not the best way to be such as things you say or do?

I look forward to seeing what you discuss among yourselves!  Remember, do NOT copy and paste any sections of this assignment prompt into your posting.

Guidelines for Discussion: Do NOT copy the prompts.
