communication 200
Given our visit to the library on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 and the lecture delivered by AJ about APA (6th ed.) on Friday, November 1, 2019, the goal is for each student to demonstrate familiarity and skills with the range of research available on the selected course topic. For this assignment, students will demonstrate a few skills pertinent to engaging in advocacy in any type of situation regardless of the topic. Specifically, successful completion of this assignment serves as the foundation for future assignments and will aid students in developing the class Question of Value and identifying essential issues, to develop preliminary positions on the course topic as well as provide an opportunity to gain familiarity with APA (6th ed.). For this assignment, students will be assigned a partner. Each student will gather six (6) sources that reflect different perspectives or opinions related to the course topic and our QOV. (Keep in mind that 10–12 sources will be required for the Final Position Paper.)
REQUIREMENTS: For this assignment, each student will identify and distinguish among the three types of sources discussed: scholarly journal articles, substantive news, and opinion- editorial (op-ed) articles. For each type of source, students must identify two articles individually (for a total of 6 sources). Students will submit an APA (6th ed.) formatted reference list with 6 sources.
What to submit:
• Format each of the six sources to accurately reflect APA 6th edition style manual. Students should consult the “Resources” section on Cougar Courses for this assignment.
EXAMPLE: An ideal citation would look like (i.e., earning 3 pts.):
Taub, M. & Fisher, M. (2017, January 30). Trump’s immigration order tests limits of law and
executive power. The New York Times. Retrieved from http://www.nytimes.com
Grading criteria (out of 20 pts)
Þ Correctly formatted each source (6 in total) in APA (6th ed.). Any error in a citation will not result in full points (6 citations @ 3 pts. each = 18 pts.);
Þ Timely submission of assignment in hard-copy (1 pt.) & electronic copy to Cougar Courses (1 pt.)
