Choose one legislator on the state of federal level who is also a nurse, and discuss the importance of their role as advocate for improving health care delivery. What specific bills have they sponsored or supported that have influenced healthcare?
Diane Black a Republican congresswomen in the Tennessee 6th district, has been an influencal force for her state and the field of nursing. Ms Black proposed the increasing Telehealth Access to Medicare act, this was passed into law by a unanimous vote. This allowed telehealth access for Medicare Advantage enrollees, and enables insurance providers the ability to add telehealth to their plans. Ms Black was also part of the Medicare Part B improvement Act of 2017, this act allows for endstage renal disease patients with medicare to have home dialysis (House.Gov, 2017).
Ms Black also spoke out against the Affordable Care Act aka (Obama Care), stated it was passed into law with a party line vote then failed to live up to promises and actually caused premiums to rise, dropped coverages and led to a weaker economy.
Having legislators who are also nurses is a great way to help our profession, as nurses we have a good knowledge of healthcare and understand what changes would be benificial to help patients and families.
