So to answer the first part it says describe/discuss sadistic behavior characteristics associated with criminal behaviors and offender personalities. So I take that is describe the similarities and/or differences between the two. If I am wrong on this interpretation I apologize in advance. I see sadistic behavior coinciding the most with the behavior of a serial killer. They are both prone to the premeditation of the act itself and a serial killer can sometimes have a ‘signature’ where a sadist usually leaves marks in specific areas that are known to give sexual gratification (APUS, 2019). They also have in common the fact that they live normal lives outside of their panned murders and their most valuable asset is that of disguise (APUS, 2019). For example, Ted Bundy, he used the kindness of a woman as her weakness and usually posed as injured or in need of help to lure his victims. When it comes to the personality, continual murderers tend to lack empathy or they don’t show any emotion just as a sadist would.
For the next posed discussion it asks to list the characteristics of an autoerotic fatality versus a suicide and how the two might be mistaken for each other. What I gathered from the readings, I couldn’t access the last two and I have no idea why, is that an autoerotic fatality usually happens when the escape methods used in the process fail and in turn kill the victim. To me this would make it really tricky as to determining if it was just an accident or a suicide because these are usually, if not always, done in isolation with no help from anyone but the victim themselves. It would be hard to determine if it was intentional especially if the victim never had any past history of depression or thoughts of self-harm. I believe that an autoerotic fatality might be mistakenly labeled as a suicide just due to the nature of autoeroticism in itself. Usually in autoerotic fatalities asphyxiation is the cause of death and can be accomplished through means of strangulation or hanging or even placing bags over their heads. This could be seen as attempted suicide if the victim was hanging since that’s a means of suicide. I think to differentiate the two it would come down to the crime scene itself.
