CJL 305 Research Methods
Assignment 2: Methods section and review
This will be the second of three papers that you construct for this class. The assignment is a three (minimum) to five (maximum) page paper concerning the research methods [KS1] [Office2] [Office3] used to construct the peer-reviewed articles that you selected for your literature review (assignment 1). The first two assignments together will be incorporated into the final research paper. Follow these steps to complete your assignment.
1 Build a table to categorize each of the research articles that comprise your literature review. Within this table organize your articles between qualitative/inductive, quantitative/deductive, or mixed methods[KS4] (employing both interviews and survey results for example).
2 At this juncture you will need to examine how the data for each article was gathered (probability/non-probability sampling). Then figure out for yourself, if not specified in the method section of each article, which sampling techniques were employed for each article (referring to chapter 5 of your textbook)[KS5] .
3 Revisit your annotated bibliography that you constructed for your literature review (assignment 1). As you read through each article’s method sections, add to each brief summary/annotation focusing on the research methods used in each article. For example, are particular findings generalizable? If not, how do they compare you’re your other articles’ findings. These details will form the skeleton for your methods section (see step 4).
4 Now you are prepared to construct a methods section (assignment 2) about your topic. In short, this the section where you detail how your topic has been researched. This second paper explores how we know what we know about the topic that you have selected to research this semester. You may include your table in your paper if you like, but is not mandatory. This is called a methods section.
Complete steps 1-3, as soon as possible, so that you can ask any questions in class that may emerge. Now that you’ve picked your topic, found your articles, and built your annotated bibliography, and have added the methods that each article uses—then you’ll be ready to write assignment 2.
Papers should be 12-point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Methods section should be structured like essays, complete with an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Put together a title page with a working title—this will change and evolve but offers an opportunity to be creative and consider the scope of your overall findings up until this point in your research. Every paper needs a reference section to cite who and where you found your information.
