Discussion Board Module 2 - Reading (FBI Crime Data Explorer)

Students, start this Discussion Board assignment by posting a thread. You must demonstrate you read and learned from the assigned readings through the use of an FBI crime data website. Remember the NIBRS data set is an improvement to the UCR, as it oMers richer data on oMenses, oMenders, and victims. First, access and explore the website: Crime Data Explorer. Second, review the information that is oMered on the website for national, state, county, city, and university level information notice crime type. There are four demographic categories: age, sex, race, ethnicity, and weapon type. Review this information by selecting certain features: location, crime type, oMender and victim information. Practice your table and graph reading skills. Pay attention to the title of the item, the years presented, the information on the x/y axis and the rows in graphs. Also, pay attention to the footnotes.

The questions for you to address in this post are:

1. Why is it important to be able to use crime data from the FBI to answer questions about crime? Explore the Crime

Data site by toggling through the filters. Identify two important graphs about crime/victimization/ oMenders that all class members should know. Take a screen shot of these two pages you have created by using the filters. Put the screenshots in your Discussion Board post.

2. For each graph, use several sentences describe what is important about the screenshots you include in your post to discuss in our class.

For example, given the graph above, it is important to look at aggravated assault as a distinct crime over time (5 years), as general violent crime (assault, homicide, robbery, etc.) trends may cover over important observations. This graph reveals aggravated assault data over time and compares it the clearance rate (arrest). The clearance rate for aggravated assault is never higher than about 35-40%.

Present the screenshots of the graphs you have created. In the description of the graph always write answers in full and complete sentences. You are presenting evidence-based answers. Do not use first person in your answer or state your feelings/beliefs (no use of I feel …). Finally, do your own work!

REMEMBER, RESPOND IN A CRITICAL WAY TO TWO PEERS. Go beyond saying you like the post to advance the conversation in a meaningful way. Ask them about a related issue that they did not address. Ask if they considered X or saw Y on the website.

Remember to review the Discussion Board Protocol (DB) and Class Etiquette in the Welcome Module.

Remember social science is the evidence to make a judgement, not simply an opinion based on intuition. Due on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 11:59pm.
