Paper will be submitted via Turnitin on Moodle. 12 page minimum; no maximum Essay Topics – Choose ONE Compare and contrast the [economic, cultural] viability of live bands to electronic based music starting in the 80's. * Ex. Analog vs. digital, computers vs. human reasoning, etc. (must still relate to central CBUM topic)* Or Compare and contrast musicality/production of the past w/ current trends in production (be specific regarding bands, band leaders/producers and song titles) • Does predictability sale? • Does sound quality sell? • Do stereotypes sell? Or Should we realistically expect solutions to complex world problems from teens and twenty-something rappers and musician of today? Or As for the future of rap, are performers still able to authentically rap about the ’hood, when some of the conditions that created rap have changed? (Ex. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and others have become multimillionaires) Or 1. Can hip-hop be viewed as a global-learning-experience? • If so, how/why? • If not, why not?
• Is the "commercialization" of hip-hop a positive or negative phenomenon? • Is hip-hop, as an art form, separate from the industry of hip hop?

Submitting your paper early is a great idea. The system can become overloaded at the last minute. You are not limited to the subjects that are outlined in the essay guide. There is no advantage to using the subjects in the course description. You can research and write on any aspect of music or culture that relates to Hip-Hop culture or Rap. Just pick a topic that interests you and research it. Your own opinions are not important here - indeed they are to be avoided. Research your topic and support your arguments with citations. Include these citations in Chicago style. About writing the paper: Be careful to avoid colloquial English. Use an academic or scientific writing style. Colloquial means ‘casual or slang language’ For example. don’t say: “I think that...” say “research has shown that…” and then add your citation. Don’t say “let’s begin with...”. Read a couple of academic papers to get the feel of what’s required. You don’t have to follow the format of an academic paper just write about the subject (that relates to CBUM) and offer some insights and show that you have researched it. Minimum 3000 words (never mind the number of page numbers that are mentioned in the Formatting Guidelines - less than 3000 words will cost you marks. More than 3200 will also cost you - this is different from what the guidelines say! Citations are simply done with a built-in feature in Word. Here is an excellent Word how- to presentation. Although footnotes are acceptable in Chicago style. Use a Bibliography only. Use inline citations as described in the video below. https://youtu.be/r4srwwHGWzg I have used it exclusively in all of my papers without a problem. The presenter in this link above uses MLA style, but you should choose the Chicago style in the Word menu as your preferred style. I know that the Essay Topics pdf says that Chicago style is 'suggested', BUT You are required to use Chicago Style - inline citations and not footnotes. I know that footnotes are OK in Chicago style but, in the Social Science papers, use Chicago Style; and it is simple to change this using the tool that I suggested above or Zotero or some other Citation management tool. Note that in Chicago Style the last name of the author comes first then a comma and the first name. You can always find an author - everything was written by a person, and they should be acknowledged. Here is an example: Anderson, Leon. 1999. "The open road to ethnology's future." Journal of Contemporary Ethnology 451-59.
Times New Roman font - double-spaced. 3000 words to 3200 words, Indent paragraphs. DO use paragraphs - a page-long paragraph is difficult to read. This is just good writing practice.
Use good grammar. If the grammar is weak your mark will be weak. I strongly suggest that you use Grammarly or the grammar check in Word to check your writing.
Don’t send drafts to check. Do get started though - you don’t have to write on the course content - just the course subject (CBUM) - any aligned material is OK.

Your name *Page numbers are required. Date paper was submitted Course code *Name, date, course code left aligned and single-spaced, title of paper centre aligned.
Title This is a template document outlining the formatting guidelines for the essays written for
the Contemporary Black Urban Music course, taught by Professor Ron Westray. Your first
paragraph will be an introductory paragraph outlining your thesis and supporting arguments.
*Writing is double-spaced and left-justified. 12 point font, Times New Roman. Use
standard margins. Paragraphs are indented.
Your body paragraphs will introduce your main points, supported by evidence that you
have discovered through research. * Your essay will be no less than 3000 words, excluding
graphics and bibliography. Here, you will want to cite some relevant information.1 After you cite
this information, discuss how it supports or relates to your argument. For some additional
support you may include a photo, for example, like this one of my cat, the very important hip
hop artist, whose work is relevant to your argument.
My cat, the very important hip hop artist.2
1John Doe, An Amazing Hip Hop Book (Toronto: Prestigious University Press, 2018), 17. 2Jessica Todd, My cat, the very important hip hop artist, 2018, Photograph, Original size 2976 x 3968, Jessica’s house, www.catscanberapperstoo.org.
2
You will explain why this photo of my cat is relevant and supports your argument, perhaps citing
research from an additional source.3 If, later in my essay, I choose to cite different information
from a source that I’ve already used once in my paper, I can use a shortened footnote format. 4
The final paragraph of your essay you should draw your paper to a succinct but
thoughtful conclusion. You may choose to restate your thesis and main arguments, but also
explain why these ideas are important.
Your bibliography should be on its own page, and the format should be consistent with
your citations. The Chicago Manual of Style website is an excellent resource for formatting your
bibliography properly5 if you choose to use this style. Scroll down to see a sample of Chicago
style bibliography.
Your paper will be submitted via Turnitin on Moodle. Academic integrity is expected.
Topics need examples and or through explanations that are proofed and edited by YOU. Strive
for clarity in your thesis - is it understandable? Writing must be focused on chosen topic and
based in facts, not personal opinions.
