At the doctoral level, your ability to read and evaluate research is one of the most invaluable skills you will develop. It is not just about understanding what the article says, but it is also about figuring out if the research done is credible, if the research methods are sound, and how you might apply the findings to your field or your personal situation.

When you write papers, work on your final project, or contribute to your organization or field, you will need to build your arguments and ideas on solid evidence. This means that not every article published on the topic belongs in the work you are doing. Being able to quickly assess the usefulness and quality of an article will save you time and provide strength to your argument.

For this pre-work discussion, reflect on the required resources you reviewed and respond to the following prompts. Please note: No peer responses are required for this discussion forum.

Describe the importance of keywords when searching library databases for research sources.
Compare and contrast the nuances of a scholarly source and a popular source.
Identify at least one resource about evaluating research that is not in your required reading and describe why you think it will be helpful.
Discuss how the credibility of sources affects the trustworthiness and validity of a research study.
Examine how you might use the resources presented in your advanced study courses and your final project, and why they are important.
Formulate one question that you would like to learn more about based on what you have reviewed.
