After reading chapter 6 an example that stood out to me was the passage stating "Labor economist Kirabo Jackson has demonstrated that even the dreaded administrative headache known as “teacher turnover” captures the value of informed switching. He found that teachers are more effective at improving student performance after they switch to a new school, and that the effect is not explained by switching to higher-achieving schools or better students." It stood out because its now common knowledge and spread via social media that its actually benifitale to job hop rather than be loyal to one company. In terms of pay and now what I know to be called "range" it only hinders you to stay at one spot. Like I said in my week 4 paper, I feel as though I have a lot of disciplines, I'm competent in and demonstrate range. To make it simple I would focus on the medical field. Anyone in the medical field understands there's no such thing as just a medical professional, there are literal hundreds of subspecialties. In the Navy I'm an FMF corpsman, I've worked in Emergency medicine, public health, health admin, and flight medicine. Chapter 7 is called "flirting with your possible self" in short, the chapter is trying different jobs that at the time seem like the right fit. The chapter tells a story of Frances Hesselbein who eventually becomes a big shot CEO because of her range as a generalist. If I were to pick two areas of improvement It would be correspondence and instruction writing. I've gotten to a position in the military where I'm no longer "front lines" and fill more of a human resources manager role for other medics. I used to think I was Fixed as a worker bee and that this was above my head. I realized where I am now and that I'm growing into the role directly because of my experiences. Epstein, D. (2019). One example that stood out the most in this chapter is the author's statement, “If we treated careers more like dating, nobody would settle down so quickly” (Epstein, 2021). I can surely agree with this statement that if we treated our careers this way, we wouldn’t settle until we found a job we loved to do. One discipline in which I would say I have demonstrated competence is organization. I feel like I am good at planning things ahead of time. It makes it easier for me to set goals in between to get to the end objective. At the same time, I am setting milestones to reach to make sure I am making progress.

I want to continue to expand my range in two areas: gardening and cooking. These are the things I enjoy doing besides spending time with my family. There is so much to learn in gardening. I recently started trying to make my compost and have seen how hard it is to get the perfect ratios of greens and browns. I haven’t been able to get it just right yet, but I'm slowly making progress. I believe there is so much to learn and experiment with when cooking. Every recipe uses identical essential ingredients, but everyone adds their personal touch to it.

One of the elements that stood out the most was learning about a vast number of people like me. For example, the background story of Vincent Van Gogh. He tried so many things before coming back to the thing that he enjoyed doing the most. He couldn’t mimic other artists of his time but created his unique style while exploring.

My understanding of general studies is that it serves as a gateway to a vast realm of knowledge. It caters to those who seek a broader understanding of the world, beyond the confines of specific professions. This course has significantly enhanced my problem-solving skills, enabling me to approach conversations and challenges with a more comprehensive perspective.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the course was the opportunity to delve into the life experiences and drafts of my peers. Despite our diverse backgrounds, we all shared a common desire to broaden our horizons and become generalists. Initially, I was uncertain about what to expect, but as the course progressed, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the readings and discussions. Understanding the interconnectedness of different fields can lead to more comprehensive and creative solutions. My perception of general studies has evolved significantly throughout this course. Initially, I saw it as a way to explore multiple interests without being confined to a single discipline. However, I now realize that a General Studies degree offers much more. It provides a unique opportunity to develop a broad skill set and think critically across various domains. This kind of approach equips us to understand complex issues from multiple perspectives, fostering many skills.

I chose a General Studies degree because of its versatility and the freedom to tailor my education to my interests and career goals. The ability to connect interesting disciplines and see the bigger picture is invaluable. One of the highlights of this course has been the interactions with peers and faculty. Dividend Distribution

After an organization has become publicly traded and had time to mature, they must determine how to distribute their free cash flow. When deciding this, it is important that the organization recognize that since they are a publicly traded company, the free cash flow is not owned by the firm, rather it is the shareholders (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2024). Another consideration to be adopted by the firm is that their primary objective is to maximize shareholder value (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2024). Utilizing these two mindsets, if the company plans to retain free cash flow for investments, the investments must contribute to an increase in value for the shareholders. Therefore, an optimal distribution policy consists of decisions that will maximize the intrinsic value of a company, increasing the shareholder’s wealth. However, an optimal distribution policy is not a universal system and must be established on a company specific basis.

Implementing an ideal dividend distribution policy is dependent upon the company’s earnings and free cash flow. The optimal dividend distribution policy may vary depending on shareholder preference (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2024). For example, some shareholders prefer to receive their payouts through an increase in capital gains because they are taxed at lower rates than dividends, this is known as the tax effect theory (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2024). Contrarily, some shareholders argue that without dividend payments, managers in the form have more capital to spend at their discretion, possibly decreasing the value of the company (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2024).

Dividend distribution policies are very impactful to the capital structure of any mature firm. The decision on how to distribute free cash flow has rippling affects that affect both the shareholders and the firm. For example, a company may choose to pay out high dividends to the shareholders, which would create a large tax burden on the shareholders. Also, opting to pay higher dividends effectively lowers the firm’s ability for investments and the firm’s ability to increase intrinsic value. There are many factors that must be taken into consideration when developing a dividend distribution policy, the firm must consider taxes, stockholder preference, free cash flow, and the effect this decision will have on the capital structure of the firm.

Three optimal dividend policies include stable, constant, and residual. Stable dividends are predictable. Mature companies will opt for stable dividends since they can predict their payouts. A stable dividend can be maintained even during times of lower earnings. “The goal is to align the dividend policy with the long-term growth of the company rather than with quarterly earnings volatility.” (Chen, J) Constant dividends allows companies to pay a percentage of their earnings every year. This option allows for a return that’s dependent on the company's earnings, even if it increases or decreases. Regular constant dividends show a level of financial stability and minimize any investor uncertainty. Residual dividends mean that dividends are paid from leftover earnings after all profitable investment opportunities have been funded. This is more volatile than the constant or stable dividend. These can affect a firm's capital structure by retaining earnings, equity and debt balance, as well as the cost of capital. If a company is regularly paying out a portion of its profits to shareholders, then the amount of earnings retained reduces. Less retention means a smaller equity base over time. If the company chooses to issue more debt to maintain dividends, its debt to equity ratio increases, which also increases financial risk.
