Conclude with a critical review of the lessons learned and the actions taken at the local level to mitigate and prepare for the next incident.

Research a homeland security or emergency/disaster management issue that applies to what you have learned in the course thus far. You may use the textbook readings or course lecture materials. In a minimum of three (3) pages (about 750 typed words), students are required to:

Provide a synopsis of the State (no higher than the State level) emergency or disaster. What occurred? When? Who was involved? What  parties or agencies?

Describe the impact of the event at your State level. Who was affected and how was the incident managed?

Discuss what you learned from the disaster as it relates to Homeland Security or Emergency Management to this point in the course. Remember what we have covered thus far (History of EM, Natural & Technological  disasters and Risk Assessments, Mitigation, Preparedness, Communications, Response, Recovery and Terrorist Threat). Link the real world event, to the course textbook and course material.

Conclude with a critical review of the lessons learned and the actions taken at the State level to mitigate, prepare, respond and recover to the incident.

Follow these steps to complete this assignment:

1. Conduct a Risk Assessment on a specific target in your community, a school, hospital, business or government office (be sure to choose an actual specific target for this assignment).

2. Next describe the natural, technical or man-made hazard which is most likely to threaten your target. For example, the Ambassador hotel in my town of Mayberry is most likely to face a natural hazard such as a tornado. Mayberry is a small midwestern town so terrorism and earthquakes are unlikely to occur. However, the threat from tornadoes are a real possibility.

3. Conduct historical research of past hazards to establish a baseline for how much risk your community faces from this hazard. What is the frequency of this hazard? Is it predictable and or cyclical (tornado or hurricane season)?

4. Describe what the impact of the hazard and the loss of your target would have on your community.

5. Discuss how the risk to your target can be mitigated?

6. Which agencies and or private entities may be involved in the risk analysis process and mitigation process.

7. Be sure to demonstrate your understanding of the terms and concepts associated with Risk. For example, RISK (R) can be calculated as follows: R = f (C, V, T)

· C = the CONSEQUENCES of an attack on a particular target

· V = an assessment of the VULNERABILITY of the target

· T = the THREAT or likelihood that a specific target will suffer an attack or disaster

Assignment Requirements:

1. A cover or title page with your name on it.

2. Labeled topical headings (e.g., Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion, etc.).

3. Length: The report must contain a body of text approximating 750 typed words (about 3 pages double-spaced, 12 point font).

4. A reference page containing a minimum of three (3) course-external resources used and cited in the report. References cited at the end of the report must be cited in text to illustrate how they were used.

5. Written in APA Style.

Each student is required to submit one research paper (in APA format, double-spaced with appropriate peer reviewed citations) which will involve some self-reflection but will mostly be focused on integrating concepts from the text, discussions, and supplemental materials. The topic must be approved by the instructor. Page range is 8 to 10 pages (not counting title and reference pages) of text. Papers are due no later than Sunday, the final week of class.   See "Topic Selection Suggestions" below for some research paper topic ideas. If you prefer, you are welcome to choose another topic (one not listed below). Again, all topics require instructor approval and can be submitted by email to the instructor.  The goal of this research paper is to describe the impact of your topic on Domestic Security Management.  Depending on your topic, you will need to address some or all of the following…Why is this topic important?  What are you claiming?  Can you back this up with facts and analysis?  What can be done about this threat?  Who is impacted?  What resources are required?  What are the second and third order effects of this disaster and improper Emergency response?  Be sure to link your topic to specific terms or EM principles found in the textbook or other course resources.

Course Paper (50 Points)

This course includes one written assignment, due at the end of the term. The paper is designed to help you explain macroeconomic concepts in your own words, connect them to real-world events, and strengthen your writing and research skills.

 Assignment Instructions:

· Choose one chapter from the course that interests you most.

· Summarize the key topics of that chapter in a clear, organized way.

· Apply the main concepts from the chapter to a real-world event or situation (current or historical).

· Provide concluding remarks that may include your own perspective, as long as they are supported by sound economic reasoning.

 Format and Expectations:

· Minimum length: 4 pages (excluding title page and bibliography).

· Focus on quality of analysis and clarity of writing, not just length.

· Use a logical structure (introduction, body, conclusion).

· Include a thorough review of the literature on your chosen topic.

· Introduction and objective must be specific.
