Global Product Management
For this module, you will prepare narrated presentations using PowerPoint presentation software. You will create your audio presentation by using an audio/video capturing tool. To access the capture tool, follow the tutorial found in the assignment descriptions.
For your signature assignment, you will synthesize the various aspects of product management and design and extend this into the global area. Using the lessons learned as they relate to the thinking harder mindset and the associated change leadership strategies in marketing, you will consider the following aspects as you take product management international.
· Major forces driving globalization and global product management
· Impacts of the uncertainty of global product management
· Conducting a global PESTEL environmental scanning process
· Strategic aspects exemplified by global product development
· Management of global opportunities
Take some time to explore the PESTEL process below:
Key to global product management is the concept of being “always on” and forever vigilant to the changing cultures and consumer behavior across the world. Ideally, product managers seek a standardized product strategy in order to maximize profits per unit by economies of scale and unit cost of production. However, product managers must be ever vigilant of the foreign market demand for localized or non-standardized products in order to satisfy the local demand. A standardized product strategy may not work in another region of the world.
You will bring together the previous weeks of learning as you assess a target market, undertake a brief environmental scan, consider the product fit, and then recommend a go-to-market strategy.
On the left-hand navigation, select the next content item to continue.
Product Management & Ethics
This week is a culmination of previous work as well because product managers must present a succinct product management strategy based on ethical principles. As with doctors, lawyers, accountants, and judges, product managers must conduct their work using the utmost integrity. There are numerous ethical guidelines that product managers must adhere to, including the following examples:
· Cause no harm in product development and use.
· Consider possible addiction or other aspects of product design that may be deleterious to health.
· Identify technological advances that present positives and negatives.
· Determine the global impact of ethical product development.
· Recognize the balance between consumer demand, harm, and company success.
As illustrated below, the bliss point is a measure of when people feel bliss following the addition of salt, sugar, or other additives to food. As with food, there is an ethical point relevant to other products and solutions. Making a cellphone exciting and colorful might actually make users stay engaged longer, which has an associated ethical aspect. Figure 6 below illustrates the bliss point.
Figure 6. The Bliss Point. This graph illustrates that increasing the saltiness of a food item improves the food's perceived taste until it becomes too salty, at which point the perceived quality of flavor declines. The apex where salt maximizes flavor is labeled the Bliss Point.
Ethical problems are arising out of the use of new technologies that are deleterious to health, safety, and the environment. Technological advancements like genetically modified food, radiation from mobile phones, and medical equipment malfunctions could be considered dilemmas rather than problems. Examples of defective services and products, or products that are innately dangerous such as alcohol, tobacco, fast automobiles, and chemical manufacturing, can be found all over the world.
Animal testing and their rights or the use of economically or socially deprived people for testing or experimentation are other areas of concern within production ethics. Ethics of transactions between the organization and the environment that lead to pollution, global warming, an increase in water toxicity, and diminishing natural resources have also been examined around the world.
The advent of the Internet and social media has dramatically changed the importance of effective marketing communication, especially in difficult situations where ethical standards must be upheld. You will explore what it means to be a good communicator in today's global economy. With the advent of global telecommunications through social media ecosystems and multimedia live streaming, the world of effective marketing communications changes daily. Many social media platforms are global but more effective regionally, such as but not limited to, WeChat in China and Twitter in the U.S.
As this course is drawing to a close, now is a time for analysis and reflection, and as such, you will review all materials and feedback from your professor. You will reconstruct and analyze the course attributes and synthesize them into your personal growth in product and change leadership within the marketing domain.
Finally, you will coalesce and compile the key attributes of the course to compile a change leadership-styled product management checklist. Such a checklist is portable by nature and will become a companion to you in your journey into the global world of marketing.
