Analysis Paper #1
This summer I have been working at New City Neighbors as an apprentice. I am learning how to run a non-profit farm with a focus on building up the youth in the neighborhood. We are a group of people who want to see the world in a better place, so we work to give people healthy food options while empowering people to become greater versions of themselves. We really try to make the neighborhood a better place.
After hearing about some of the other intern’s work culture, I believe that we have a strong, healthy culture at New City Neighbors. We are a team of people focused on making the world better, we do not use any harmful chemicals on any of our vegetables, and we are all working on trying to save the planet from the harmful effects of climate change. Every day we have small check-in meetings with each other to keep tabs on everyone’s mental and physical health. This helps keep positive vibes in the group and allows people to know when a person may need space. This environment allows people to work at their own pace and feel like their voice is heard.
Another thing that I am proud of New City Neighbors for is their overall customer service. We have a mix of personalities that work at New City. Some people are quiet and reserved, while others are very outgoing and friendly. Because New City has both a farming and customer sales aspect, we are able to delegate tasks to based on people’s strengths. People are not forced to work in situations where they may feel uncomfortable for long periods of time. Yes, there are times when people have days off or take vacation and people will have to cover, but most of the time people are able to work at their own pace with as much human interaction they want in their job. This freedom allows our best customer service workers to work in customer service. This keeps the customers happy because they get to interact with people who are outgoing and willing to help make their day better.
Another aspect of New City’s customer service is our commitment to producing quality products. We have multiple checks for quality control. When harvesting in the field, we throw away any produce that has too many imperfections or pest damage. We store the food in a refrigerator, which helps kill a few types of pests. We also check all of the food during the washing process. We throw away any weeds or other plants that may have accidentally gotten added into the veggies. By having these many checks, we are able to catch most of the stuff that is not high enough quality for our customers. We tell new employees to throw away any food that they would not want their mom to eat.
Having great quality food is very important to our organization, but we also pride ourselves on connecting with the community in many ways. We deliver groceries to multiple food co-ops around Grand rapids. We have Thursday night café nights where we can sell flavorful, healthy pizzas to the community. Many groups come and tour the property, and we also allow people to volunteer and learn about the farm. We try to form many personal relationships with people and encourage them to start their own gardens. By bringing people into our space, we are able to spark interests in people who would have never had any thoughts about how their food is grown.
Building strong relationships is what provides New City a competitive advantage over big box stores like Walmart or Meijer. Our customers trust that our products are well made and grown with love. This causes them to come back and try new products that we bring to them. Many people have never heard of kohlrabi, but we are able to introduce it to people and teach them how to cook it at home. Experiences like this cause people to come back to see what new things we may have later in the season.
New City Neighbors has developed a culture and product that really helps provide great benefits to the customers and employees both. We are all able to have access to quality healthy food because of the work that we do. I have begun to foster relationships that may help me grow my own business once I leave New City, and my bosses are very encouraging and helpful. I believe that this opportunity aligns well with my morals and goals for my life.

This summer I have been working at New City Neighbors, and I have gotten to experience many different facets of the farming business. New City Neighbors is a farm that tries to ensure that fresh food is made available to members of the Creston neighborhood. The company achieves this by growing food close to the neighborhood and ensuring that is harvested as close as possible to the customer’s pickup date. This focus on customer service causes the company to stand out, but the culture in the company is also special. The culture has been formed around empowering the youth in the Creston neighborhood by teaching them how to grow, harvest, and clean their own food. Other youth employees work in the café adjacent to the main farm location where they are empowered to learn how to prepare the foods that the farm crew harvests throughout the week.
When people buy food from New City Neighbors, they can be assured that the food they are eating has been grown without the use of harmful pesticides and it was harvested within thirty minutes from the pickup location. Customers are also made aware that youth from the neighborhood had a hand in picking and preparing the food for pickup. While at pickup, customers can pick blueberries and tomatoes in the field while waiting on brick oven baked pizza from the café. This focus on the customers causes people to look forward to coming back. Because the experience of picking your groceries up at New City Neighbors is done so well, people choose New City Neighbors over some competitors. Instead of being a random store where people grab foods from unknown origins, people who get food from New City Neighbors know exactly where the food came from and who grew it.
Being able to connect with the community so well gives New City Neighbors a competitive advantage over large chain grocery stores. People may have more convenience at large stores with long opening hours, but the experience at those stores can never match what people get at New City Neighbors. The food from these stores will not be nearly as fresh and much of it will be grown out of season. If people want to connect with the earth and have some control over what goes into their body, then large chain stores will never be an option. New City Neighbors allows people to volunteer at the farm if they want to see how to grow the foods they love to eat. People would have to travel to Mexico or further to see where Meijer’s food comes from.
The work culture at New City Neighbors is part of the reason why customers keep coming back to New City Neighbors. Youth employees are a core focus at New City Neighbors. The company is focused on growing the minds and capabilities of young people through farming or kitchen work. Youth employees are encouraged to go into the community and make positive changes happen. The focus on the student’s growth influences many of the decisions regarding funding, new hires, and potential changes to the company. This causes the culture to be swayed in a way that caters to the youth.
I personally find the work culture exhausting. I feel like we are forced to be “happy” in front of the youth employees. The adult employees are forced to have conversations that are youth friendly. I feel like I must turn on my work voice and filter on before heading to work in the morning. I am very different from my other adult coworkers, and I could not see myself ever wanting to hang out with them outside of work. This is not an issue with New City Neighbors, because they have done a great job of hiring people who fit the company’s vision and mindset, but I do not believe that I was a good candidate for all the things they are trying to do in their company. I could do without the focus on the youth employees, and I wish there were more people with similar backgrounds as me who worked there.
New City Neighbors has been able to stay around for so long because they have focused vision and people to help see that vision into existence. The community is able to enjoy a farm in their backyard that actually cares about making their lives better. Teens are given opportunities and a chance to grow and learn new skills that may help them later in life. It may not be a place that I would want to work at for a long time, but I am glad to have been able to work there and help their vision come to life for another season.
