Video Outline Assignment Instructions
Overview
You will complete one Video Outline Assignment as preparation for your Video Presentation Assignment. This outline will incorporate content you have learned throughout the course so far. Along with what you have learned about identifying a research topic and question, locating scholarly sources that give some additional context to your topic and question, and determining the kind of research method you would like to use to answer your research question that you identified as an area of interest toward the beginning of the course. The Video Outline Assignment is submitted as a separate assignment from the Video Presentation Assignment, even though it is closely connected to the Video Presentation Assignment.
Instructions
Students will also demonstrate current APA style formatting.
Acceptable Sources
Throughout the content of your Video Outline Assignment, you must support your assertions with scholarly sources as described in the instructions below.
Acceptable sources include the current Introduction to Research textbook (this source is specifically required for this assignment.) Plus, include a minimum of two more of the sources that you used earlier in the course, which can include the current edition of the Publication Manual, video presentations throughout the course, and the scholarly sources you used in your assignments earlier in the course.. Include properly formatted in-text citations within the content of your outline to support your content.
Acceptable Formatting
You are not required to use complete sentences in the outline. However, it is acceptable to use complete sentences if you prefer.
Use APA Style headings for your outline. Review section 4.26 in the Publication Manual, “Writing From a Outline.” This brief section gives some ideas for organizing. However, our assignment varies from the last sentence in that section in the manual this way:
Do use APA Style headings for this outline.
Do not use Roman numeral headings or other kinds of formatting.
Assigned Topics and Content. Do not re-write these instructions word-for-word into your outline.
1. Introduce yourself, including your major, possible career interests.
2. Based on these interests you identified, what is a research topic that interests you? What is the research question that you would like to study about that topic?
3. Describe the related journal articles that you found during your Module Two essay. Explain how this literature fits into your interests. What kind of background information do these journal articles add to your area of interest. This will be a brief review of the literature section.
4. Based on what you have learned in our course about various research methods, which method would you prefer to use to help find an answer to your research question? Use information from the Introduction to Research textbook and other course materials to help you identify which method you prefer to use. Be sure to include proper in-text citations and references listings. (Hint: Your essays from Modules Two, Four and Six will help you along with other assigned textbook reading assignments and viewing assignments.)
5. What are some strengths and some limitations with your preferred research method? Back this up with statements from our course content.
6. Discuss how these strengths and limitations you identified in the previous question influence issues of reliability and validity.
7. How would you go about collecting your data? There can be various applicable ways to collect data depending on the research method you are using. You select the ways you would collect data. What difficulties might you encounter collecting your data? How would you go about analyzing your data? Why is this the best approach to use for what you are doing? Note: For this assignment, you will not actually collect data, or analyze it, or report your findings. But if you did have to gather and analyze data, how would you go about doing it?
8. Conclude with a summary statement telling what your research question is, the method you think would best help you find out about that research question, and challenges or limitations you might encounter.
Save the outline you created as a Word document.
Submit your completed outline document into Canvas, including the appropriately formatted title page, a properly formatted references page listing the sources you used for your presentation, all as one document.

Overview
For this assignment, you will submit an original, professional-looking PowerPoint (PPT) presentation on some aspect of professional communication. See specific requirements below.
Required Slides:
I. Title Slide
A. The title slide is the first required slide of your PPT.
B. The title slide must include the following elements: the title of your presentation, your full name, class name & section number, and your institution (Liberty University).
II. Content Slides
A. At least 15 content slides are required. Content slides do not include the title or reference slide(s).
B. Content should be accurate with a logical sequence from the first to the last slide.
C. Major points should be clearly stated and supported with relevant examples, thoughtful analysis, and approved sources.
D. All content slides must contain speaker notes.
· Speaker notes are a presenter’s cheat sheet, if you will. In other words, speaker notes are hidden from your audience but can be viewed while giving a presentation.
· Speaker notes are NOT a copy of the information on your slide. Instead, speaker notes expand upon and offer further clarification regarding points on each content slide.
E. Four relevant and professional-looking images/graphics are required. All images/graphics must:
1. support the theme of the presentation.
2. illustrate the topic of the slide and/or explain a complex issue.
F. Citations for any information used on your content slides – whether paraphrased or directly quoted - must be included directly on the slide or in the notes/speaker notes area under the pertaining slide. See below under Avoiding Plagiarism for more on citations.
III. Reference Slide(s)
A. The reference slide will be the last required slide(s) in your PPT.
B. This slide (or slides) will contain all sources used in your PPT presentation.
C. Format sources according to the most current APA formatting guidelines.
D. In addition to current APA formatting guidelines, the inclusion of the complete URL (sometimes called a permalink) is required for all full-text, peer-reviewed/scholarly articles retrieved from Liberty’s online library journal database. Note that this is not the same as the doi # (unless the URL takes your reader directly to the full-text article within Liberty’s online library journal database). If you are unsure about the specific URL/link, you can copy the entire web address from the top of the browser's address bar once you are viewing the full-text article within Liberty’s online library journal database.
Sources
Five (5) credible sources must be used to support your topic. Approved sources include:
· the course textbook (as listed on the course syllabus).
· full-text, peer-reviewed/scholarly articles published within the last five (5) years and retrieved from Liberty’s online library journal database.
· the Bible
Avoiding Plagiarism
· Create and submit an original PPT presentation. Do not submit someone else’s work or a previously submitted assignment from this or another course.
· Information used from outside sources should support your presentation, not make up your presentation.
· Provide citations directly on the slide or within the notes area under the content slide for:
· all statements, ideas, and thoughts (whether paraphrased or directly quoted) used from an outside source.
· tables, data, images, etc., used from an outside source.
· Include all sources from which you use information on your reference slide(s).
· Use all sources on your reference list within your PPT.
Other Requirements and Reminders:
· Individual slides and the overall design of your presentation must be professional and engaging. Choose your theme, images, transitions, color choices (for font and background), layout, etc. wisely. The course textbook has good information about this, so don’t forget to revisit this section.
· Your PPT must be created and uploaded as a PowerPoint file. DO NOT upload a PDF file, as a PDF file will not show speaker notes or transitions.
· A running header is not required.
· An abstract is not required.
· The course textbook will be a great resource when looking for a topic that relates to some aspect of professional communication. Some examples of topics include (but are not limited to):
· How to be an Effective Verbal and Nonverbal Communicator
· How to Give an Effective Presentation
· Effective Communication Within Teams
· Overcoming Communication Barriers

This is the module two research interest topic.
Research Topics, Questions, and References
One critical step in the research process is identifying and developing the research topic. Selecting a research topic is essential as it sets the foundation for the entire research project. After choosing a general topic idea, the next step is to formulate research questions. Research questions provide a clear direction and focus, guiding researchers or investigators in their quest to acquire knowledge. After selecting the research topic and questions, it is necessary to review scholarly sources to gain insights into the existing research relevant to the topic.
Research Topics and Questions
A research topic is a subject or issue that a person is interested in investigating. In other words, it is an area of interest that forms the basis of a research paper. It provides a direction to the research, setting the foundation for the entire research project. A research topic also helps researchers focus on specific questions. It also helps to structure the research project. A good research topic should comprise three key features: originality, value, and feasibility. First, it must explore an original area or take a novel viewpoint on an existing area of study. A good research topic should also provide value and make a contribution, either practically or academically. Lastly, a good research topic should be manageable and practical, considering the resource constraints most researchers face.
A research question is the main question that a researcher intends to answer. A clear research question drives the research process. It states exactly what a researcher wants to uncover, giving the research project a focus and direction. Equally, research questions shape the research objectives and guide researchers in formulating hypotheses. By crafting purposeful and well-defined research questions, a researcher can conduct meaningful and worthwhile research.
Research topics and questions have some similarities and differences. First, both focus on the same subject or issue. They also offer direction to the research. However, a research topic is a general or broader area a researcher is interested in, whereas a research question is specific information a researcher is questioning within the topic. Thus, a research topic is broad, while a research question is focused. For instance, if a research topic is infectious disease, the research question could be, “how does infectious disease affect population growth?” If the research topic is mental health, the research topic could be; “how does mental health affect academic performance?” If the research topic is immigration, the research question could be, “how is the United States handling immigration challenges?” If the question is too broad, the researcher can adjust it to something like, “what does U.S. immigration policy mean to undocumented immigrants?”

The article examines how social media influences psychological functioning, health, and well-being of teenagers and young adults. The researchers used 5 databases to identify research articles between 2000 and 2023. They utilized English publications, longitudinal surveys, cross-sectional studies, and reviews. Based on the research results, social media and smartphone use among adolescents is associated with increased mental distress, suicidality, and self-harming behaviors. This article contributes to my research topic as it pinpoints the hazards of smartphone and social media use.
