Describe your own style in relation to task and relationship orientations. What are your strengths and weaknesses? How can you improve?

I am task oriented, I am always looking for something to do, when I am on the job or at home. I love seeing a finished product, a clean house, all the laundry done, I get satisfaction from doing something, and doing it well. Our text is right on the money with this, I do also tend to be this person when I take vacation, I want to go and see and do everything, and when I am restrained by time it can get stressful for me trying to make up my mind what I want to do more. I generally work from home on Friday’s doing contracts and invoices and keeping my books, things like that. I get up in the morning and I have the whole house already clean by 11am (Northouse, 2018). I have always known this about myself, but I didn’t know that there was a name for it until now.  One of the downsides to being this way is that I can be a perfectionist about it, and when people help me with things, if they don’t so it just so, then I feel like it isn’t done good enough or to my specifications, and I have to tell myself to let it go, that it is fine. Did I mention that I can also be a control freak?

When it comes to my leadership style in terms of task versus relationship, I would say I try and take from both with more of an emphasis on the task side. I feel building relationships with your employees is vital to having an effective team. I also feel that there are certain times when it is acceptable to converse and times when it is not. I’ve found that connecting with people on a personal level makes them more willing to work hard for you when the need is present. They feel they are on good terms with you and do not want to let you down.

To improve in this area, I need to be able to reach my entire team on a personal level. Sometimes I find it hard conversing with others that I do not have anything in common with due to me being unable to find things to talk about. Outside of work this is not a problem, because if I do not relate to them then I can go through life without having a relationship with that person. In the workplace that is not possible, so I need to find a way to hold a conversation with everyone so that my entire team will feel comfortable talking to me.

I also find a certain satisfaction with completing objectives in my personal and work life. Although I strive to get everything needed accomplished, I have a bad tendency to not put it down in a list format so that it’s easy for me to recall what tasks I need done that day. I really need to work on this aspect, because there are countless times when I feel like everything that was assigned got completed, but when I look back on it I realize that there where steps that were missed. To improve on this, I must learn to put my tasks in writing. Set my team a list of objectives that need to be completed, and when the employees complete the tasks I can cross them off to give me a quick reference as to what’s left that needs to be accomplished. I can even put this on a white board, so that the team is able to see where they sit on today’s tasks as well.
