Activity
- Watch the following videos on literary analysis, close reading, and “six tips for literary analysis” from Ms. Peer Editor.
- Take organized notes while watching. Then respond to the questions below. Use complete sentences and refer to specific ideas from the videos. Submit your notes and responses for this assignment.
- Define literary analysis. How does it differ from summary or personal opinion? What makes an interpretation persuasive to an academic audience?
- Explain close reading. Identify the strategies discussed in the video and describe how they help a reader move from noticing details to developing an interpretation. Which strategies do you already use consistently in your academic work? Which will you intentionally use this semester, and why?
- Identify Ms. Peer Editor’s six tips for developing a distinctive literary analysis. Explain how at least two tips could help a writer produce an interpretation that is both original and grounded in evidence. If you have used any of these approaches in previous writing—or while discussing music, film, or books—describe the example and explain how it supports your point.
- Apply one tip to a familiar cultural debate. For example, consider whether Beyoncé or Taylor Swift is the stronger performer. State a clear claim, identify criteria for evaluating the performances, and support your reasoning with specific examples. Then explain how this approach differs from simply stating a preference.
- Connect the videos to your own reading and writing. Choose one strategy you plan to practice this semester. Describe a specific step you will take to use it when analyzing a literary text.
- Define literary analysis. How does it differ from summary or personal opinion? What makes an interpretation persuasive to an academic audience?
