Laboratory Module 6

Human Genetics

Name Date

GRADING: 100 points total — Part 1: 32 points (12 worksheet + 20 Blood Type Quiz); Part 2: 24 points (4 worksheet + 20 Human Migration Quiz); Part 3: 44 points (worksheet). Optional Part 2 extra credit: up to 40 additional points.

Part 1 – Mendelian Genetics and Inheritance of Traits (32 points)

Objective – What do you think is the objective of Part 1 of this laboratory module? Write the objective in bullet form below. (2 points)

· Objective

Do an internet search and find out who Gregor Mendel was, what his profession was, what he studied, and why we call him the father of modern genetics. Write a one-paragraph mini-biography addressing these questions. (10 points)

Did you complete the Blood Type Quiz as required in the Lab Module? _____ Yes or _____ No. This quiz is graded separately in the Canvas gradebook and counts for 20 points toward the 100-point module grade.

Part 2 – The Biology of Skin Color (24 points + up to 40 extra-credit points)

Objectives – What do you think are two objectives of Part 2 of this laboratory module? Write them in bullet form below. (4 points total; 2 points each)

· Objective 1.

· Objective 2.

After completing the Interactive Activity on the Biology of Skin Color, cut and paste screenshots of your quiz answers and score here. This optional activity is worth up to 20 extra-credit points (not included in the 100-point base grade).

Write a short reflection on the impact this activity had on you personally. Did you learn something new? Were you surprised by the content? Did these new facts alter your opinion in any way? Do you think you will share what you learned with others? In what context? (Up to 20 extra-credit points; not included in the 100-point base grade)

Did you complete the Human Migration Patterns through DNA Quiz? ______ Yes or _____ No

This quiz is graded separately in the Canvas gradebook and counts for 20 points toward the 100-point module grade.

Part 3 – Genetic Genealogy (44 points)

Student instructions: Complete the activities in the Part 3 lab instructions using the DNA Painter Shared cM Tool (https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4). Type your answers in the spaces provided. For both required screenshots, capture the requested results, then cut and paste each screenshot directly into its designated area in this Word worksheet. Resize images to fit while keeping the numbers and labels readable.

SUBMISSION: Once all three parts are complete, save/export this Word worksheet as a PDF before uploading it to the worksheet submission area provided in the Canvas Module. Submit the PDF, not the Word file, to avoid file-size issues. Check that both screenshots are visible in the PDF.

Objectives – What do you think are two objectives of Part 3? Write them in bullet form. (4 points total; 2 points each)

• Objective 2:

________________________________________________________________________________

Quick Check 1 – Interpreting Shared DNA (6 points)

If you share 3,400 cM of DNA with one person and 0 cM with another, which person is the closer biological relative? Why?

________________________________________________________________________________

Activity 1 – Comparing Strangers (0 cM)

Enter 0 cM in the “Filter by cM or %” box of the DNA Painter Shared cM Tool and review the chart. Follow the steps in the Part 3 instructions.

Quick Check 2 (8 points). Based on your observation of the tool, why is it impossible to build a family tree or find a shared common ancestor using only a result of exactly 0 cM?

Activity 2 – Comparing Siblings (2,600 cM)

Enter 2,600 cM in the tool and inspect the relationship probabilities directly below the entry box.

SCREENSHOT 1 – Evidence for 2,600 cM (6 points)

Cut and paste one screenshot displaying the 2,600 cM entry and the percentages/relationship list directly below it.

PASTE SCREENSHOT HERE (resize to fit as needed)

Quick Check 3a (4 points). What relationship category has a 100% probability in the results?

________________________________________________________________________________

Quick Check 3b (6 points). Within that category, name three possible relationships besides “Full Sibling” that could share 2,600 cM.

________________________________________________________________________________

Activity 3 – Solving a Mystery Case (1,750 cM)

Enter 1,750 cM in the tool and examine the highlighted relationships in the family tree chart.

SCREENSHOT 2 – Mystery case evidence for 1,750 cM (6 points)

Cut and paste one screenshot of the top portion of the colorful family tree showing highlighted possible relationships for 1,750 cM.

PASTE SCREENSHOT HERE (resize to fit as needed)

Quick Check 4 (4 points). Name two possible relationships highlighted in the “Grandparent / Aunt / Uncle” generation category.
