New Capitalists: Law, Politics and Identity Surrounding Casino Gaming on Native American Land,Eve Darian-Smith argues that the development of casinos on Indian reservations in California has led to some contradictory responses by non-Indian Californians. Describe her argument. What is the basis of non-Indian opposition to casinos or to casino expansion? How do old stereotypes or prejudices affect the thinking of current opponents of Indian gaming? What is “Indian capitalism,” and how is it different than other types of capitalism? Do you agree with the author’s assessment that currently the only way that Indian tribes can be self supporting is by operating casinos? Explain.
