GMIT 487 Wk3 Assignment:
The main assignment Instructions:
Purpose
The purpose of the Week 3 Assignment is to identify an organization with a business problem or opportunity and develop a project business case to justify a project that will satisfy the business need. The business case is developed in a way to accurately describe and communicate the rationale to initiate a project.
Background
As leaders in our organization, we are often presented with problems or opportunities that need to be communicated to various individuals and groups throughout the organization. This can be done verbally in meetings or through written documents. A business case is a common document prepared to introduce a problem or opportunity, provide an analysis of the current situation and desired future state, and then provide recommendations and plans for addressing the problem or opportunity. This is usually accomplished through an initiative or project. A business case (referred to as a Strategy Artifact in the PMBOK Guide, 7th ed.) is a value proposition for a proposed project that may include financial and nonfinancial benefits (2021).
Assignment Prompt
Use the knowledge gained in this course to accurately present information related to a business case that will justify a project to solve a business problem or take advantage of a business opportunity. Develop your project business case based on an organization of your choosing, a problem or opportunity that would be logical for this organization, and a project that could satisfy this problem or opportunity. You are encouraged to use one of the projects identified within your group to develop this business case.
Download the Project Business Case provided and save a copy with your last name in the file name. Complete the sections in this template and submit them to the assignment folder no later than Tuesday, 11:59 p.m. eastern time of Week 3. [Project Name – insert the name of your project here and format the heading in black font]
[This section provides an introduction to the project. One to two paragraphs should be sufficient to introduce the project at a high level. Review the PMBOK for more information about creating the business case for a proposed project].
At this point in the project, you are working on this project from the perspective of justifying the benefit of the project to a potential sponsor or to an organization that is funding part or all of the project. You will develop a business case that will summarize the organization’s assessment/need for the project.
Business Needs
[Use this section to discuss what is prompting the need for the project (i.e., what is the reason you are asking to initiate the project). You will provide a situational statement documenting the business problem OR opportunity to be addressed, including the value to be delivered to the organization. Who will be affected by the problem/opportunity and the solution you are proposing? These people or organizations are referred to as stakeholders. Outline the scope of the proposed project – what will be done in the proposed project and what will be delivered as a result of the project? This is described at a high level. Describe the characteristics of the product, service, or result of the project. Include a discussion of the relationship between the project/product and the business need that is driving the project and the product(s) that is/are being created.]
Analysis of Situation
[Describe the organizational strategies, goals, and objectives. What is/are the root cause(s) of the problem or main contributors of an opportunity. Describe any gaps in capabilities needed for the proposed project versus existing capabilities of the organization. An example might be if you are implementing an organizational-wide Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Your organization does not have the IS/IT system integration experts to manage this type of project.
Identify and briefly describe (one sentence will suffice here) key high-level risks known at this time and the critical success factors that could be used to measure project success. What decision criteria will be used to assess courses of action (see PMBOK for examples).
Recommendations/Evaluation
[Briefly state the recommended option to pursue in the project, such as an analysis results for the potential option, any constraints, assumptions, risks, and dependencies for the potential options and success measures. What is your implementation approach? In this approach, think about the milestones, dependencies, and roles/responsibilities.
Briefly describe your plan for measuring the benefits the project will deliver to the organization. In this plan, also consider the ongoing operational aspects of the recommended option beyond the initial implementation of the project’s product/service.
